Written in 1595, A Midsummer Night's Dream concerns the marriage of three pairs of lovers and the magical influences of the fairies. Hermia loves Lysander, but is ordered to marry Demetrius, who in turn is loved by Helena. Puck, servant of Oberon, the King of the Fairies, weaves his mischievous magic with disastrous, comical consequences. Ultimately, a happy ending and order is restored by Oberon. This magical play is steeped in poetry, and it is for this reason that Shakespeare is successful in portraying a dream on stage, something few playwrights have been able to accomplish.
