Faye, a writer, has returned to London with her two sons, and purchased a dilapidated council flat. While the boys stay with their father, she pursues the renovation of the place, determined to create a family home from the squalid and neglected building. Along the way, a series of encounters with others - from Gerard, her former partner, to a garrulous and profound hairdresser; from a phlegmatic ex-army builder to a dryly self-deprecating author on a literary festival panel - will give her much to ruminate on...
